Amid a violent storm, Daland’s ship reaches a Norwegian harbor, where a ghostly vessel with black sails suddenly appears. Its captain, the Dutchman, is cursed by God to come ashore once every seven years in search of a woman who can redeem him. He stays at Daland’s home, offering treasures in return, and Senta—Daland’s daughter, long fascinated by the legend of the Dutchman—falls in love with him and vows to save him.
However, amid the opposition and misunderstanding of her fiancé Erik, the Dutchman prepares to return to the sea. At that moment, Senta proves the purity of her love by throwing herself into the ocean. Through her sacrifice, the Dutchman is finally freed from his curse and attains redemption.
The 2012 Bayreuth Festival production reinterprets the ghost ship and its characters through the lens of modern industrial society and commodified human relationships. Korean vocalist Samuel Youn received widespread acclaim for his performance in the leading role.
