Beloved for the aria "Una furtiva lagrima" (A Furtive Tear), Donizetti's L'elisir d'amore has captivated audiences worldwide for nearly two centuries with its witty story and lyrical melodies, making it one of the most cherished comic operas of all time.
Nemorino, an innocent and awkward young man, loves Adina with all his heart, but the free-spirited and independent Adina rarely notices his sincerity. Complicating matters, the confident soldier Belcore proposes to Adina, while Dulcamara, a boastful traveling quack who arrives in the village, sells Nemorino a mysterious "elixir of love" that captures his naive heart. The uproar that follows as Nemorino, having drunk what is really nothing more than cheap wine, stumbles through one mishap after another is comic gold — yet beneath it lies the purity of a young man who loves without condition or calculation. After much confusion, Adina finally comes to recognize Nemorino's unwavering devotion, and the two confirm their love for one another, bringing the story to a heartwarming close.
