Violetta, the dazzling star of Parisian high society, has long renounced belief in love, until she opens her heart for the first time to the sincere devotion of the young Alfredo. The two retreat from the city to live a brief happiness together, but Violetta’s fragile health and the unforgiving pressures of society soon close in on them. Invoking family honor, Alfredo’s father demands their separation, and Violetta chooses to sacrifice herself, accepting the role of the heartless woman to protect the man she loves. Unaware of the truth, Alfredo publicly humiliates her in anger, only to learn later of her sacrifice and be consumed by remorse. When they are finally reunited, Violetta is at the brink of death, and she passes away quietly in Alfredo’s arms after a fleeting moment of hope.
