Carmen, a free-spirited and provocative gypsy woman, works at a cigarette factory in Seville. Don José, a soldier standing guard, is drawn in by her seductive charm and abandons his duty, ultimately landing in prison for letting her go free. Once released, José reunites with Carmen and is drawn into her world of smugglers, forsaking even his hometown fiancée Micaëla and his own mother. But Carmen's affections soon shift to the celebrated toreador Escamillo. Outside the bullring in Seville, amid the crowd's roaring celebration of Escamillo's triumph, José makes one final desperate plea for Carmen to return to him. She flatly refuses, casting aside even the ring he once gave her. Overcome by despair and rage, José stabs Carmen to death, then surrenders himself, confessing amid the cheers still echoing from the arena.
